The first Thai kingdom came into being in Sukhothai in 1238, touching its peak under King Ramkhamhaeng in the 14th century. However, it later under the control of the kingdom of Ayutthaya, whose rule extended most of present-day Thailand as well as today's Laos and Cambodia. The Burmese trounced Ayutthaya in 1767 by the Burmese. King Taksin of Ayutthaya founded a new capital at Thonburi. General Chakri, who sat on the throne has Rama I, succeeded him. He set up his capital at today’s Bangkok. The kings who followed him were known as the rulers of Chakri dynasty. and became King Rama I, the founding father of the Chakri dynasty that rules (constitutionally) to this day. Thailand is the only South-East Asian country never to have been subjugated by a European power. The country was known as Siam until 1939.
Influence of Buddhism can be seen in all walks of life in Thailand. Saffron clad monks are omnipresent in the country. Every morning, monks leave their wats and go for the people for alms.
