Taiping

Taiping is a town of peace which few tourists come to disturb. Nevertheless it has some superlatives like oldest golf course, oldest museum, oldest zoo and smallest hill resort. Lake Gardens
With its two lakes and lush greenery spread over the area of 66 hectares, Lake Gardens is a popular place for picnic and evening strolls. The British, once the colonial masters of Taiping, liked the gently rolling hills of Lake Gardens, their swathes of green grass and natural fragrance. As you climb up past the Esplanade, you will see several colonial relics including the ruins of British residency. In the lakes you could try activities like aqua-biking and fishing.
Golf Course
The Golf course in Taiping is the oldest in Malay states. It is a pretty good place to have few rounds of golf and relax.
Perak Museum
Perak Museum, established in 1883, is the oldest museum in the country. And this is not the only reason to visit the museum for it offers a slew of intriguing exhibits. You would find here indigenous rarities like the pulasan fruit and mammal binthrong. The throne of the Sultan of Perak is the pride of museum. A section on Malay culture offers conventional crafts like textiles and basketry, musical instruments and puppets. You would also see interesting exhibits on the Orang Asli. The museum is located at Ji Muzium, opposite the jail.
Taiping Zoo
Taiping Zoo, oldest in Malaysia, is the home of 180 species. Prime attractions here are tiger, black panther, gibbon, honey bear, white-headed eagle, elephant, tapir, estuarine crocodile, and mangrove snake. The animals live spacious enclosures, while resemble their natural habitat. You could walk the zoo or take a train ride.
Bukit Larut
Bukit Larut, a hill resort at short distance from Taiping, could be visited on day excursion. Also known as Maxwell Hill, it is the oldest and smallest hill resort in Malaysia.
Wet Market of Taiping
Wet market of Taiping is wooden barn-like building, with iron roofs and carved wooden eaves. Built in 1884, the Wet Market is still in good shape. The market bustles with the activities of shoppers.
Shopping
In Taiping, you could shop for souvenir items like caneware, small brass articles, basketry and wooden toys.
